Ken and I went to the AAA (antique airplane club) meeting about 45 minutes north of us yesterday. It was fun since we had not gone to one for a couple of months. I got to visit with my lady friends from Dallas and Oklahoma who also came. One friend, Oma B. who is in her 70s, was not there. Ann said she is off on an archeological "dig" somewhere with friends. Now, what a life that must be.
Afterwards, we drove to the state fair. It was a mistake to go on a Saturday afternoon. I-35 around I-30 to the fair took an hour bumper-to-bumper and too an extra hour, but we had a good time with our XM radio going.
We visited with the Dallas Police Department horse patrol and their horses that stay at the fairgrounds permanently. Their horses are mixtures of breeds for their athleticism and size. There was a Clydesdale/thoroughbred, a Belgian/thoroughbred, and Percheron/thoroughbred that were on show to the public, plus stalls for about 20 other horses attached to the DPD. One could jump 6 feet, and one was 22 hands tall. I asked the medium tall officer how they get up on one of those big horses. He said that they either lowered the stirrup down all the way and then raised it back up, or got a push up, and it wasn't always pretty. Vonnie, I also saw an Arabian which, of course, was the smallest one I saw.
We also went to the cattle barn and saw hundreds of longhorns, mostly from Texas and Oklahoma. They are a lot larger than I thought they would be. Some horns curved outward symmetrically, and some were not symmetrical at all. Some breeds had horn that stuck straight out to the side with not curve at all. All of them had a mixture of brown and white spots or coloration, or black and white spots or coloration.
Next year we can go on a weekday when it will not be crowded. Yea! Love, linsue
We want to take you two to the Lynden Fair some day, it's a smaller, gentler, less car prone fair in true rural America. We have gone most years, and heard Loretta Lynn (who lived there for several years), The Oak Ridge Boys, The Kingston Trio, (all aging, like us, of course), and the horses do their draft horse competitions in the 8 team wagons, usually about 10-14 wagons, that do formations and competitive manuvering. But no Texas longhorns here. That would be truly interesting. Thanks for the message on the blog. Love, Llew

ReplyDeleteThe Lynden Fair is usually the second or third week in August, always mid-August. It's out where we went for the auto show, but larger and more active. Love, Llew
